How this check works

We look for a sitemap the way a crawler does: first by reading the Sitemap: line in robots.txt, then by trying /sitemap.xml.

A sitemap helps search engines find pages that are not well linked internally. It does not force anything to be indexed.

If your sitemap is an index file, it points at other sitemaps rather than listing pages directly — that is normal for larger websites.
